Megabus Accidents in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a great place, but sometimes you just gotta get out of the city. See family in New York, or take a food tour on the Baltimore waterfront or a walking tour of D.C. You can battle traffic up and down the Eastern Seaboard or you can leave the driving to the professionals.

Megabus carries people up and down the Mid-Atlantic states and across most of the nation. They have low prices for tickets and deluxe accommodations. Their double-decker buses with plug-ins at each seat can make the ride a breeze. That carefree trip on the interstates can come with risks to passengers and other drivers though.

Support for Megabus Accident Victims

The drawback, of course, is that bus drivers do make mistakes and buses do get into accidents. You can wind up in the hospital after an accident while riding a Megabus. You can also be in your own car when one of these giant vehicles rams you. The injuries can be severe and you’d be forgiven if you worried over just how much help Megabus will give victims of a bus crash.

Edith Pearce of The Pearce Law Firm, P.C., is a Philadelphia lawyer dedicated to protecting victims who were left vulnerable in an accident and then left vulnerable to the tricks of Megabuses lawyers and insurance agents. Edith Pearce has helped bus crash victims earn the compensation they’ve needed to pay for the best medical care and to rebuild their lives. Dangers for Philadelphia Megabus Passengers

When you take a bus to your destination you turn the wheel over to a professional Megabus driver. You may even fall asleep as you travel along the interstate. It’s a great service, but just like any trip along a busy highway, there are dangers involved.

Bus drivers are monitored closely and are only allowed to drive so far for so many hours. Unfortunately, these rules can be broken by drivers wanting to make more money or by companies who talk safety but also encourage unsafe behavior behind the scenes. Tight deadlines and the bottom line can always lead to cutting corners on budget and safety precautions.

An NBC investigation into Megabus accidents found that over a two-year period the company had at least 16 accidents. Those accidents left over a dozen people injured. In some of Megabus’ accidents, drivers were cited for filing a false report of hours, and one driver was ticketed for speeding and working more than 15 hours on duty.

What’s more, in February of 2020, a Megabus carrying nearly 50 passengers slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer along Interstate 80 in New Jersey. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the bus was on the way to New York City from Pittsburgh. A passenger says that the bus took an unexplained and dangerous swerve about an hour before the accident. Even though investigators said there were only minor injuries, that passenger says she saw several people bleeding with head injuries and leg injuries.

Compensation for Megabus Passengers

Bus accidents can make for complex legal cases and that’s not fair to the victims who may be in desperate need of compensation just to pay basic living expenses while they heal. Major bus companies can have lawyers working to limit the compensation each victim gets, no matter how much fault Megabus carries in a collision.

It’s also important to note that buses that travel across state lines have caps on what they must provide accident victims. This might not be an issue in a minor incident, but in a truly devastating crash affecting dozens of people, it’s possible to get much less than you need to pay your hospital bills and cover your lost time at work. You may only get enough to pay for ambulance fees and emergency care and nothing for the future physical therapy you may need.
