The Pearce Law Firm has announced the Empowering Women in Law Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship is open to women nationwide who are currently attending a law school in the United States.

The workforce is changing dramatically as bold women enter with courageous determination to make a difference and change the world. In the words or Marie Curie, “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” Women are capable beyond measure at reaching success in anything they set their mind to and the field of law is no exception. Whether it is representing a victim of sexual harassment against a large company or handling a local bicycle accident case involving a child or loved one , women are making a difference in the world of law every day.

Edith Pearce, the founder of the Pearce Law Firm P.C. in Philadelphia commented, “When I first started practicing law, many times the male attorneys would assume I was the court reporter when I entered the room for a deposition; that changed quickly when I started asking their client questions they were not always prepared for.” Edith Pearce is in a very small percentage of women who own their law firm. It can be very challenging balancing work and family life, but women should know they can have a very successful and rewarding career in the law.

According to the Wall Street Journal, women now make up one third of all the lawyers in the United States. This is a tremendous increase from the 1970’s when just 4% of all lawyers were women. The percentage of females entering law school rose steadily from 1967 from 4.9% through 2001, when women almost made up 50% of incoming law students. However, since 2002, the percentage started to decline. According to the American Bar Association Commission on Women in in the Profession’s February 2013 report, women now make up 46.8% of entering law students, a decline of almost 3% since 2001.

At the Pearce Law Firm, we believe in empowering brave women who want to keep breaking the glass ceiling of the “old boys club.” This scholarship is envisioned to encourage and support exceptional accomplishment and leadership for future women attorneys now in law school.
