On Saturday, May 12, 2018, a cyclist was involved in a collision on Spring Garden Street. Tragically, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

According to 6ABC, the cyclist and an SUV were both traveling eastbound on Spring Garden Street at 10th Street around 7:40PM when the collision occurred. According to the article, the cyclist was knocked off of his bicycle, then the vehicle ran him over. Philly.com notes that this cyclist was a part time courier for Caviar.

Our hearts go out to this cyclist and his family after this terrible crash.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia points out that this crash occurred just days before the Ride of Silence, which takes place May 16, 2018. The Ride of Silence honors injured and killed cyclists and also raises awareness of the rights of cyclists to ride the roads. If you’d like to participate, be sure to visit the Facebook event page.

Spring Garden Street is a heavily trafficked street for Philly’s cyclists and we hope that infrastructure is improved here. The Spring Garden Greenway never came to fruition, but that or protected bike lanes would help keep cyclists safe.

Rear end bicycle accidents

While we’re not sure exactly what took place in the above accident, news reports state that both the cyclist and the motorist were traveling in the same direction, so this accident may have been a rear-end accident. Rear end bicycle accidents are one of the most dangerous accidents a cyclist can be involved in. That’s because cyclists are in danger of being propelled over their handle bars onto the road after being rear-ended. Rear end bicycle accidents often result in traumatic injuries or death.

Spring Garden Street has a bike lane. We’re not sure if the cyclist was in traffic or if the driver hit the cyclist in the bike lane. Unfortunately, many drivers tell us that they were distracted or never noticed the cyclist when these types of accidents occur.

Contact us after a bicycle crash

Rear-end accidents are almost always the fault of the motorist. However, if you were injured after being rear-ended, you’re still going to want to contact a Philadelphia bicycle accident lawyer who understands how insurance companies work. They’re very likely to attempt to blame you for your injuries, even if you were rear-ended.
