The New Jersey Turnpike is one of the most famous roadways in the United States. It also has some of the most dangerous stretches of pavement in the country. Traffic on the roadway is almost always high, and it’s often moving as speeds in excess of 65 mph. In cutting through some of the most populated cities in the state, it’s consistently one of the top 10 worst places to drive in the United States, especially for out-of-state drivers who aren’t accustomed to the aggressive drivers and the frantic pace of traffic. For many of them, it seems as if they have targets on their license plates.
Some Common Causes of New Jersey Turnpike Accidents
Accidents happen every day on the nearly 150 miles of the New Jersey Turnpike (NJTP). The common causes of those accidents are just like those of any other densely populated area: Some of them follow:
- Distracted driving, like talking on a cell phone, texting or inputting data into an information when traveling on the roadway.
- Speeding, including driving too fast for weather or traffic conditions, especially during the winter months.
- Rear-end collisions involving drivers who follow another vehicle too closely.
- Lane change or merging accidents when drivers fail to properly check their blind spots, especially truck drivers.
- Crashes that are otherwise caused by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two.
Another Sad NJTP Fatality
In May 2020, another traffic death occurred on the Turnpike in Cherry Hill when a 40-year-old North Carolina woman who was traveling with her husband and 7-year-old daughter was killed in an accident with a flatbed tow truck. The woman’s husband lost control of the family’s minivan and collided with the rear of the truck in the early morning hours.
Out-of-State Residents Should Retain Experienced and Effective Local Counsel
