Head-on collisions are one of the most deadly types of crashes for obvious reasons. The weight and inertia of both vehicles make up the impact which adds greatly to the risk of serious injury or death. By far, the most head-on fatalities come on rural two-lane highways, however, urban and suburban head-on collisions can be just as deadly.

Head-On Crash in Tioga-Nicetown Sends Two to Hospital

Police say that a wreck happened around 3 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2020, when a car crossed the centerline of Wissahickon Avenue. The wreck causes significant damage to the vehicles, and One of the drivers had to be cut out of their vehicle.

It’s unknown at this time which driver crossed over the centerline, and officers are still investigating the incident.

Urban Head-On Crashes

In some ways, all head-on collisions are alike. Two vehicles try to occupy the same space at the same time and crash into one another. Usually, one driver has crossed the centerline. In rural crashes, the likelihood of a serious head-on collision is high because on most rural highways, there are but a few feet separating cars going in the opposite direction at speeds typically over 55 mph.

When driving in urban environments, head-on collisions happen with the cars traveling much slower, and there is often a median or turn lane separating the drivers. However, a moment’s distraction or bad decision can cause a head-on collision all the same.

Urban Head-0n Crash Injuries

Regardless of the severity of rural head-on collisions, a head-on collision anywhere can be devastating. If each car is only going 35 mph, the crash can equal a 70 mph impact. This can cause substantial and life-threatening injuries and even fatalities.

Local trauma centers in Philadelphia have seen certain common injuries that come from head-on collisions, some of them are:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Fractured Arms/Legs
  • Broken Ribs
  • Displaced Ribs
  • Thoracic Spine Injuries (Whiplash)
