January 18, 2018 crash
On this sunny but brisk day, a cyclist was involved in a bicycle crash at the intersection of 63rd and Vine Street in West Philadelphia. 6ABC has aerial footage showing a red Jeep Cherokee sitting on top of a bicycle. According to 6ABC, the accident occurred before noon. Thankfully, the cyclist is recovering at the hospital and is expected to survive. At the time of this article, we’re not completely certain what exactly happened but it appears that the SUV may have been making a right hand turn.
Right hand turn bicycle accidents
You’ve probably heard about one of the most recent right hand turn bicycle accidents in Philly as it had significant media coverage; it was the crash which involved a garbage truck on Spruce Street. Even though Philadelphia is a bike friendly city, Spruce Street and Pine Street are especially dangerous for cyclists. Just weeks after the garbage truck crash there was a box truck crash, also involving a right hand turn.
Almost 5% of all motorist vs bicycle accidents involve a driver taking a right hand turn. Right hand turn accidents involving bicycles are frequently the result of distraction, failure to yield, or a driver missing a cyclist in their blind spot. When drivers don’t notice the cyclist, they often run into the cyclist or turn in front of the cyclist.
