Walking to your destination should be the safest way to get around town, but unfortunately, careless drivers make travel by foot very risky and dangerous at times.

A distracted driver can look at a text or adjust a radio when they should be monitoring the road for unprotected pedestrians just trying to get across the street. The inattention can lead to a devastating accident that can inflict permanent injury or even cost someone a life.

Pedestrian Killed in Mount Holly Hit-And-Run

A woman was killed after getting struck by a car in Mount Holly, New Jersey early Friday morning. WPVI-TV reported the accident happened around 5:45 a.m. on Route 38 at the intersection of Pine Street on October 16, 2020.

Mount Holly Police officers found the female victim unresponsive on the scene. She was later pronounced dead.

The driver involved in the accident fled the scene. Police have not released a description of the hit-and-run suspect or the vehicle involved. If you saw anything in the area anytime from 5:15 a.m. to 5:45 a.m. that might help investigators you are asked to contact the Mount Holly Police Department.

Support for Pedestrian Victims and Their Families

An accident involving a pedestrian has a frightening chance of causing heartbreaking consequences. Someone on foot is helpless against what may be a speeding and distracted driver and the injuries suffered may be serious enough to claim an innocent life.

A careless act can rob a family of a loved one and also leave the surviving relatives facing ambulance and hospital bills and funeral costs. The family will also have to deal with these hardships without the victim’s financial support he or she may have provided the family through a weekly salary.

Families should not have to bear these burdens alone as they grieve. And yet, in hit-and-run cases, drivers may escape the consequences of what they’ve done.

If the suspect is never identified and located, the family of the deceased may be able to request compensation for the tragedy if the victim was protected by an auto insurance policy. The victim’s own uninsured/underinsured coverage would be called upon to reimburse the family for things like funeral costs and any outstanding medical bills. An attorney working to protect the family can make sure the insurance company offers enough compensation to protect loved ones now and in the future.

If the driver is eventually apprehended, then the family is allowed to file a wrongful death claim against the responsible driver’s insurance. This civil lawsuit can be brought forward by a relative representing the rest of the family at any time, even if the driver was still involved in a criminal trial over the hit-and-run charges.

An attorney can also represent the family in a wrongful death claim and demand the maximum compensation possible to make sure the victim’s spouse, children, and other close relatives are financially stable now and in the years to come.
