There are few crashes where the difference in size and weight is so great than a city bus and bicycle accident. A bike and rider weigh around 200 lbs., and a SEPTA bus can weigh up to 40,000 lbs. not including passengers.

When riding on a city street, a cyclist in Philadelphia has all the rights and responsibilities that a motor vehicle driver does. This means that other drivers on the road must give the cyclist the same right-of-way that they would the driver of a car.

If the bicycle is riding in the traffic lane and is keeping up with traffic, then it has the right to be there with the motor vehicles. This means that if a bus or other vehicle comes upon a cyclist going the same direction, then the vehicle driver must give the cyclist the same due caution it would any other car or truck.

Cyclist in Critical Condition After Hit from SEPTA Bus

On Saturday, November 16, 2019, a cyclist was struck by a SEPTA bus while riding bike eastbound Snyder Avenue around the 400 block when a SEPTA traveling westbound struck him knocking him off his bike. According to official at the scene, the cyclist was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

It’s unclear how the accident happened or who was at fault. Police are still investigating the accident, and no charges have been filed.

Bicycle and Buss Accident Injuries

Although we don’t know what happened in the above-referenced incident, it’s a known phenomenon that drivers of motor vehicles often don’t see the low profile of a cyclist when they are driving. Many times, a driver will look right at a cyclist and simply not see them putting the cyclist in serious danger even when the cyclist is obeying all the rules.

The impact of a bus and a cyclist can be devastating causing significant injuries. One of the reasons is that when a cyclist is hit, he or she is almost always ejected from the bike and suffers a second impact with the pavement. This cause certain injuries common to bus and bicycle crashes:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Severe Concussions
  • Wrist Fractures
  • Broken Arms/Legs
  • Chest Compression
  • Internal Injuries/Bleeding
  • Severe Road Rash
